Instant Pot chow mein is a easy, if nontraditional, way to make chow mein at home in no time! This simple recipe is made with just a little prep and can be ready in less than 30 minutes.

It makes a great side dish or a simple main dish. The recipe can easily be customized, and I’ve included some ideas to help you make it your own in the “tips” section below.

How to make Instant Pot chow mein

Step 1: Press sauté.

Step 2: Add the broth, green onions, celery, garlic, soy sauce, ginger, oyster sauce, brown sugar, and rice vinegar to the inner pot.

Step 3: Warm, stirring regularly, until it starts to steam but don’t bring it to a simmer or boil. Press cancel.

Step 4: Break the noodles in half and lay them in a crosshatch pattern. Gently press the noodles into the broth.

Step 5: Close and lock the lid. Press manual high pressure and adjust the cooking time to 4 minutes. Be sure that the pressure release valve is set to sealing.

Step 6: When the cooking time has finished, carefully turn the pressure release to venting to release the pressure.

Step 7: Add the cabbage, and give everything a good stir. Bring to a simmer, stirring regularly, and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Step 8: Stir the cornstarch and remaining 1 tablespoon broth together. Stir in the cornstarch mixer and simmer, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened, about 1 minute.

Tips

  • Noodles: Spaghetti noodles are not traditional. However, they are readily available and make a good substitute in this recipe.
  • Vegetables: Feel free to add in any other quick-cooking vegetables that you like, like snow peas, along with the cabbage.
  • Meat: For heartier chow mein, stir in leftover shredded chicken, pork, or beef along with the cabbage.
  • Lower sodium: To lower the sodium content, use reduced-sodium soy sauce and low sodium or no salt broth.

Serving suggestions

Chow mein, like fried rice, can be served as a side dish or as a main dish. If you’d like to serve it as a side dish, you can serve it with your favorite Chinese dish.

Storage

Store any leftover chow mein in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to 4 day when properly stored in the fridge.

Easy Instant Pot chow mein recipe makes delicious chow mein with almost no work!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 6 green onions trimmed and cut into ½-inch pieces
  • 4 stalks celery in 1-inch pieces
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger peeled and grated
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 pound uncooked spaghetti
  • 4 cups shredded Savoy cabbage or green cabbage
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon chicken broth or vegetable broth
